A weathered felt hat fills the frame as an elderly shepherd presses close against the flank of his cow, his face half-hidden beneath the brim in a moment of quiet intimacy somewhere in the Italian highlands. The black and white tones draw out every texture: coarse animal hair, rough wool and deeply lined skin merging man and beast into a single elemental portrait. There is something ancient and unspoken in this closeness, a bond forged through years of mountain life and tradition that needs no explanation. Photographer Beniamino Pisati captures the soul of rural Italy with rare honesty, finding in Alfio the shepherd a portrait that is as much about endurance and belonging as it is about one man and his cow.
Based in Italy, Beniamino Pisati is an award-winning freelance photographer specializing in geographic reportage. A two-time Travel Photographer of the Year winner, he documents the relationship between humans and nature globally while leading international workshops to share his poetic vision.
