Seen from high above, a frozen Dutch waterway stretches through a vast white landscape as a scattered line of ice skaters glides along its glittering surface, their long shadows trailing behind them like pencil marks on paper. The aerial perspective transforms the scene into something almost abstract, the silvery ice broken only by a thin dark crack running through its centre and the tiny colourful figures moving in quiet procession. This is the Netherlands in winter at its most elemental: open, still and breathtakingly pure. Photographer Mike Tesselaar captures the age-old Dutch tradition of skating on natural ice with a stillness that turns a fleeting seasonal moment into something eternal.
Based in the Netherlands, Mike Tesselaar is a professional photographer and videographer who turned his passion into a career after a 2020 trip to New Zealand. He travels globally, capturing striking aerial landscapes and travel content from a unique drone perspective.
