Perched on the windswept Isle of Iona off the west coast of Scotland, the ancient stone abbey rises with quiet authority amid golden grasses and blooming purple heather. Turquoise waters stretch behind its weathered walls as soft Scottish light illuminates the Romanesque tower against a vivid blue sky, lending the scene an atmosphere of deep calm and silence. The composition draws the eye from the rugged foreground rocks through centuries of sacred architecture toward the distant hills of Mull, capturing the enduring spirit of this remarkable place. Photographer Barry Crosthwaite brings his keen eye for colour and stillness to this iconic Scottish landmark, revealing a landscape where history and natural beauty exist in perfect harmony.
Inspired by National Geographic, Barry Crosthwaite developed a lifelong passion for travel and photography. Following a business career, he turned full-time in 2021, capturing portraits, landscapes and street scenes guided by a pursuit of balance.
