A lone cameleer leads a string of Bactrian camels across the sweeping sand dunes of the Nubra Valley in Ladakh, their silhouettes moving with quiet purpose against a backdrop of vast sun-drenched mountains tipped with snow and draped in dramatic clouds. The warm earthy tones of the Himalayan range fill the frame while deep shadows cast across the dunes create a sense of depth and ancient rhythm. This is India at its most cinematic — a living tradition of movement and culture caught between desert and sky. Photographer Barry Crosthwaite captures the energy and motion of the Silk Road's enduring spirit with a masterful eye for light, scale and the poetry of human presence in extraordinary landscapes.
Inspired by National Geographic, Barry Crosthwaite developed a lifelong passion for travel and photography. Following a business career, he turned full-time in 2021, capturing portraits, landscapes and street scenes guided by a pursuit of balance.
