From a sweeping aerial vantage point, this striking image captures the organized chaos of a working shipyard along the waterways of Dhaka, where dozens of vessels in vivid reds, yellows and blues rest side by side on muddy banks blanketed with wild green water hyacinth. The dense urban skyline of Bangladesh's capital rises behind the yard, its towers and billboards contrasting quietly with the weathered hulls and wooden skiffs that crowd the foreground in a scene of unhurried industrial life. A calm clarity hangs over the composition, the clear blue sky and still water lending an unexpected sense of silence to what is otherwise a landscape of labour and rust. Photographer Kaido Haagen brings an attentive and painterly eye to the street and social life of Bangladesh, finding in this Dhaka shipyard a world both gritty and quietly beautiful.
