Framed through the spokes of a spinning wheel and cascading threads of golden yellow silk, an elderly Vietnamese woman draws a single strand to her lips with practiced precision, her deeply lined face carrying the quiet wisdom of a lifetime's craft. The photograph is shot with remarkable intimacy, the warm amber tones of the silk contrasting against the worn blue of her blouse and the dark timber walls of a traditional workshop in Vietnam. Mystery and contrast define the mood here as sharp detail meets soft blur and ancient hands meet ancient technique, suspending a fleeting moment in something close to eternity. Photographer Barry Crosthwaite brings an extraordinary sensitivity to his portraits, finding in the everyday gestures of ordinary people a depth that is both deeply human and quietly timeless.
Inspired by National Geographic, Barry Crosthwaite developed a lifelong passion for travel and photography. Following a business career, he turned full-time in 2021, capturing portraits, landscapes and street scenes guided by a pursuit of balance.
