Layers of bold necklaces in turquoise, coral and white seed beads cascade across her chest, their brilliant colors singing against the darkness of her traditional robes. This striking portrait from the high-altitude region of Ladakh, India captures both the weight of years and the richness of a living cultural heritage with remarkable intimacy. Photographer Barry Crosthwaite brings his gift for human connection to the fore here, finding in a single weathered face the depth, color and enduring dignity of an entire people.
Inspired by National Geographic, Barry Crosthwaite developed a lifelong passion for travel and photography. Following a business career, he turned full-time in 2021, capturing portraits, landscapes and street scenes guided by a pursuit of balance.
