An ancient stone arch bridge curves over a glassy river in rural China, its reflection forming a perfect circle in the still water below while a lone figure wearing a traditional conical hat stands silhouetted against the misty landscape. The black and white tones deepen the calm and silence of the scene, drawing the eye through the arch toward a gentle cascade of water and a valley of trees disappearing into soft grey light. Street and social life here feels suspended in time, as if this quiet moment in the Chinese countryside has remained unchanged for centuries. Photographer Pepijn Thijsse captures the soul of old China with a stillness and compositional grace that transforms a fleeting pause into something eternal.
