Kabukicho's legendary entertainment district blazes to life in this long-exposure street scene, where a dense river of people surges through a canyon of neon signs in Japanese, English and Korean, their motion blurring into a warm human current beneath towering layers of red, yellow and electric blue light. Karaoke bars, ramen shops and gaming arcades stack floor upon floor into the night sky, turning every surface of this Tokyo neighbourhood into a vivid tapestry of urban energy. Photographer Alexander Riek captures the restless pulse of Japanese street life with a steady hand and an eye for the beautiful chaos that makes Shinjuku one of the most electrifying intersections of commerce, culture and crowd on earth.
Based in Germany, Alexander Riek is a photographer and animal scientist who travels globally. He captures the unique stories of destinations worldwide, focusing primarily on landscapes, architecture and wildlife.
