Lake Donner Piles- Sand Wrapp
When cold air drifts over warm water, the water at the surface evaporates, forming fog. Mountain lakes in the fall provide perfect conditions for morning fog: the air temperature at higher altitudes drops precipitously during the night, while the water is still warm from the summer months. One October morning I set up my tripod just before sunrise and used an eight-stop neutral density filter and a five minute exposure. The long exposure softened the mist in the near distance to gentle pastels and created a bright line of blurred fog at the horizon, with a matching cloud line just below the mountain peaks.
