Warm amber light spills from the half-timbered facades of Monschau as dusk settles over this medieval German town, reflecting softly onto the fast-flowing Rur river below. The long exposure transforms the rushing water into a silken blur of grey and white, drawing the eye deep into the canyon of historic buildings that line both banks. Stone foundations centuries old meet the intricate woodwork of upper floors, while a weathered waterwheel stands quietly at the water's edge, a relic of the town's industrial past. Photographer Alexander Riek captures this corner of Germany with a painter's patience, finding calm and silence in the play between still light and restless water.
