Somewhere in the bustling textile markets of Turkey, a bald shopkeeper peers over an enormous fortress of folded towels and woven fabrics, his eyes sharp behind his glasses as he surveys the quiet world beyond his stall. The black and white rendering strips away distraction, drawing attention to the extraordinary abundance of patterned cloth stacked in every direction, swallowing the man almost entirely into his own wares. There is a dry humor in the stillness of this scene, a single human presence nearly consumed by the rhythms of everyday market life in Turkey. Photographer Pepijn Thijsse has a gift for finding these moments where street and social life reveals itself quietly, letting the ordinary become quietly extraordinary.
