A blazing sunset turns the sky above Balboa Pier into a vast canvas of molten gold, with dozens of beachgoers moving as silhouettes through the haze while a lone seagull cuts across the glowing orb of the sun. The energy of Southern California social life pulses through every corner of the frame — families, surfers and wanderers all bathed in the same warm amber light as palm trees line the horizon and a lifeguard tower stands watch in the distance. Photographer Barry Crosthwaite captures the restless beauty of the USA's Pacific coast with a masterful eye for motion and mood, transforming an ordinary evening on the beach into something luminous and alive.
Inspired by National Geographic, Barry Crosthwaite developed a lifelong passion for travel and photography. Following a business career, he turned full-time in 2021, capturing portraits, landscapes and street scenes guided by a pursuit of balance.
