Scattered across the vast alkaline flats of the Nevada desert, dozens of bicycles lie abandoned in the dust like the remnants of some forgotten exodus, their frames casting long shadows under a warm golden haze. The wide open playa stretches toward distant mountain silhouettes beneath a sky that shifts from deep violet to burnt amber, giving the scene an otherworldly stillness that feels both desolate and strangely alive. This quiet moment from Burning Man captures the raw cultural energy of the American West, where temporary community and solitude exist side by side. Photographer Tom Stahl finds poetry in the overlooked and the in-between, transforming a desert landscape into a meditation on transience and the traces we leave behind.
Based in San Francisco, Tom Stahl is an internationally exhibited landscape and travel photographer. Having explored over 60 countries, he left engineering to capture the world, blending technical precision with dreamlike compositions. He is also the author of Traveling Light.
