Montserrat (“serrated mountain”), a multi-peaked mountain in Catalonia, is one of my favorite day trips from Barcelona. It’s an easy train ride from the city to the Aeri cable car, which climbs to an 11th century Benedictine Abbey halfway up the mountain. From there you can take a funicular or hike to the top of the mountain at 4,000 feet. You can also queue up to see a statue of the Virgin of Montserrat, the patron saint of Catalonia.
