Shot from high above an Italian piazza, this aerial view reveals a mesmerizing grid of round café tables and slender metal chairs casting long diagonal shadows across a sun-drenched stone terrace. A lone figure in white — a waiter setting up for the day — breaks the geometric pattern with quiet human purpose, grounding the abstract composition in everyday Italian life. The monochromatic tones and sharp interplay of light and shadow transform a simple outdoor setting into something closer to a graphic artwork, where repetition and rhythm do all the talking. Photographer Barry Crosthwaite has a rare eye for the minimalist poetry hidden in ordinary places, finding bold abstract beauty in the unhurried rituals of Italy.
Inspired by National Geographic, Barry Crosthwaite developed a lifelong passion for travel and photography. Following a business career, he turned full-time in 2021, capturing portraits, landscapes and street scenes guided by a pursuit of balance.
